Louis Minnaar needs little introduction. The Pretoria-based visual artist has exhibited in both solo and group shows since 2005, with a particular flare for digital medium.
Now, after 15 years, Minnaar has taken to painting and drawing again, producing a range of works inspired by traditional and modern African imagery.
“My childhood home was filled with African artifacts,” Minnaar says. “I’ve always been inspired by our continent’s artists and their ability to use abstraction in such a powerful way.”
Minnaar continues: “I’m fascinated by the duality of masks. Sometimes, they’re friendly. Other times, frightening. But they’re always captivating.”
Unapologetically bold, Minnaar’s new range is textured and colourful and yet, depicts imagery in its simplest form.
